Cahal Pech Cahal Pech is an ancient Maya archaeological site located in San Ignacio, Cayo District, Belize. Dating back to around 1200 BCE, it’s one of the oldest Maya sites in Belize. It was a hilltop ceremonial center and elite residence, offering great views over the Belize River Valley. The site includes plazas, temples, ball courts, and residential buildings. It’s smaller and quieter compared to Xunantunich or Caracol, which makes it a peaceful spot to explore.
Located on the banks of the Macal River, the San Ignacio Farmers Market is a unique opportunity to experience Belizean life. Farmers, traders, and vendors from all walks of Belizean life gather together to sell their wares. Don’t be surprised to hear a blend of German, English, Spanish, Creole and the Mayan tongue as everyone from Mennonite farmers to indigenous craftsmen use the San Ignacio Market to sell their delicious local fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs, and handmade clothing. Just beyond the market lies the heart of San Ignacio town, filled with restaurants and shops. A trip to the market or a stroll in town is the perfect way to experience the local flavors of Belize.
Belize Botanic Gardens is 45 acres of native and exotic plants growing in the Cayo district of western Belize. The garden is in a valley on the banks of the Macal River, surrounded by the Maya Mountain foothills. The main focus of BBG is encouraging sustainable agriculture, maintaining conservation, collections and engaging in conservation education. They aim to inspire visitors to protect plants and their habitats by learning more about the world of plants.
